1) Patience, when necessary. Capturing candid shots is essential to any street photographer so a good one knows to wait for just the right moment.
2) The visual clues to show that it is raining are vital to many shots. (Tip – Reflections are very good for this purpose. Any surfaces with oil or soap on them will show a broad spectrum of colors.)
3) Use available lighting creatively. Rain can be more easily seen when lit from behind. So, shoot the rain toward various light sources. (Tip – The more directly the lens is aimed toward the light, the better the raindrops will show. But, don’t let the light source overexpose your photo.)
4) Experiments with the depth of field will result in some nicely captured reflections. (Tip – Shoot with a shallow depth of field to get the raindrops and the reflections within them in perfect focus.)
Here is a variety of rain shots that feel romantic. This is not intended to be the ultimate collection, but it is representative of romantic rain photography.
Showcase of Romantic Rain Photography
We see that, with a little precaution, rain and photography obviously can go together. This in spite of the problems engendered by the nature of rain itself and the effect it can have on the equipment necessary for taking photos. Examples show that rain can be part of the romance in a photography session. Whether one is in the rain, or observing it from afar, or through photographs, it can bring out the romantic in us all. And these feelings can be successfully captured with romantic rain photography.
